Welcome to the "Reading Club"!
This is a
group activity that you will want to try right away with your residents with memory deficits. Here at Concepts du Sablier, we have been working in close collaboration with Cleveland’s Myers Research Institute to be able to offer you this very stimulating and proven activity that has been appreciated by hundreds of residents of all levels of capacity.
The procedural memory of your residents enables them to read words, sentences and easy texts for a longer period of time than you might have imagined. A simple 2-minute
reading test accessible on our Website will help you evaluate the reading capacity of each of your residents. You may be surprised to see that a lot of them who do not speak anymore or have difficulty expressing themselves often function better while reading. Try it!
Organize a reading club on a weekly basis by choosing 8, 12 or even more participants. You may find it an advantage to select people with different levels of capacities that will bring mutual aid and dynamic qualities to the group. Have the participants sit at a round or square-shaped table (setting is important). If more than one Reading Club booklet is available, let the majority decide which story to read first. Hand out one booklet to each participant and start by saying "I’ll read the first page out loud, and you can read along". Each participant then takes a turn reading a page of the story out loud while others follow along.
Themes from the booklet include songs to sing together and discussion topics that will create great reminiscing moments. You will be surprised at how people get involved in this activity.
Booklets have been tested for over 3 years to make sure that they are adapted to a dementia clientele. You will not find any illustrations that can distract readers. The text is written in very large letters and printed on 1 side of each page only. The color of the cover and the quality of the pages also make these booklets more attractive to readers. Each booklet has 18 pages, which makes them a 45 to 60 minute activity.
Discover each of these 5 very interesting and stimulating stories that you will be able to read over every month because no reading club meeting is the same as the last one. You will receive a complete procedure sheet with your booklets.
4 stories are also available in French.
